Ok, so here’re few things about training of Newfoundland puppies that you might be interested in. If you have got a Newfoundland puppy, it’s good to start with its training as soon as possible. Also, even if you are considered by pet’s owner in your family, it’s a good idea that you introduce other family’s members in puppy’s training as well. The main thing that you should tell them (and you should know that too), is that the dog must not be superior to its owner. A subordinate puppy obeys orders better than the one who thinks that’s on higher level than its owner and therefore it’s easier to train.
When you are training your Newfoundland puppy, use same words whether you are commanding or praising. If you use different words (of course that people in most of cases tend to use same, but this can happen by mistake as well), there is a big possibility that the puppy will get confused and its training will be overall harder. 

Also, when you are rewarding your puppy, do that as quickly as possible, so the puppy can realize that it got rewarded for doing something in a way it should.
While you’re training your puppy, try not to make lessons too complicated or long, especially at the beginning. If you feel that your puppy is giving up from doing certain task that you gave it, don’t become impatient and ask from it to do it at all costs. Just give him some other simpler lesson and complete the training for that day, because it’s a good idea to finish exercise with a well done job. One of the first lessons that your puppy should be taught is to come when called. 
This was already discussed in some of the previous posts, but it will be mentioned once more, as it’s very important whether you are Newfoundland or some other dog owner. You should NEVER hit your dog and there are many reasons for that. Not only that you will inflict pain to it (and hitting pets isn’t a nice thing to do), but your puppy can take that on different ways, which depends from situation. For example, if you call your puppy to come to you and it doesn’t come right away, but in 5 minutes and you hit it, your puppy might think that it will be hit every time when comes. Because of this, your puppy might resist obeying this command in future and it will make training harder overall. Even yelling is a bad thing to do, because your puppy may lose its confident.
Newfoundland dogs are known by their patience, so try to be at least patient as they are, never lose your temper and try to make both of you and your puppy happy.

Newfoundland puppies

When people see Newfoundland puppies, they usually react like: “Oh, I like them very much, they’re so cute”. Well, like all other puppies, certainly they are, but if someone wants to become their breeder, there are a lot of things that he should know about them besides their appearance. Breeding a dog is surely a nice thing to do, but great responsibility goes with it as well. So, if you are reading this and want to whether become their breeder or just being curious and want to know a little bit more about Newfoundland puppies, here are few (hopefully useful) advices.

First, let’s start with basic things that you should think about before buying a Newfoundland puppy. Puppies need to have a bed to sleep in, of course not as big as yours, but they will be satisfied with a large carton with one long side cut down to approximately 7cm from bottom and with a blanket. When talking about puppy’s nutrition, it’s ok to continue with diet that your puppy had by its previous owner. You can change diet if you want to, but if so, do it very carefully and gradually in order to avoid possible stomach problems of your puppy. Newfoundland dogs like water, so you should have got water bowl, the shallow one if possible, in order to avoid floods in your house. Like kids (and all other young living creatures), Newfoundland dog puppies like to play. Buying them toys is ok thing to do, but be very careful while selecting them. It’s very important that the toys are appropriate and not dangerous, because you don’t want your puppy get hurt.

However, besides stuff from above, there are more things that you might be interested in. For example, if you have got a swimming pool, it’s important that it must be fenced. Yes, Newfoundland dogs are good swimmers, but it happened that some dogs drowned because they couldn’t climb out. Also, when talking about water, if you have got a fish pond, it would probably be a good idea to fence it as well. Gardens can be dangerous places for puppies, because they like to chew things and some plants in garden can be poisonous for them. Therefore, you’ll probably wish to fence garden somehow, or at least prevent access to them. So, fencing is important mostly because of safety of your puppy, but to prevent it escape as well, because even a young one is able to do it.

Newfoundland – The origin of Newfoundland dogs

After reading certain content of this blog it’s a quite big possibility that you read word “Newfoundland” many times and that totally makes sense, because the blog is about Newfoundland dogs. Also, probably a lot of the people do know where Newfoundland is, but even if so, besides geographic orientation, it will be said about some more basic things, that you may have interest in, whether you do or not own a Newfoundland dog.
Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the 10 provinces of Canada and it’s located on the east of the country. Geographical, it is composed by the island of Newfoundland and land area of Labrador, which borders Quebec, one of the provinces. Originally, this province was called only Newfoundland and it became the newest province of Canada, after its joining. Since 2001, the name “Newfoundland and Labrador” it official, so following text will be mostly about whole province.

It’s easy to conclude that the name “Newfoundland” means “New Found Land” in English, while the origin of Labrador isn’t exactly determined, but it’s credited to a Portuguese explorer Lavrador. There is about half of a million people living in Newfoundland, and the total area of the province (both land and water) is about 400.000 square kilometers. The capital city of Newfoundland and Labrador St. John’s is also a largest city in province and about 40% of province’s population lives there.
If we look back in the past, we’ll be able to see that, before becoming the tenth province of Canada, Newfoundland was United Kingdom’s colony. It became Canadian’s province on 31st of March, 1949, as “Newfoundland”, but as it was mentioned, from 2001 to date official name of the province is “Newfoundland and Labrador”.
For Newfoundland and Labrador’s province climate should be said that there are 6 of its types. If we would want to call it by one name, we would probably say that Newfoundland has some kind of a humid continental climate, which is influenced very much by the sea. Northern Labrador has polar tundra climate, while the southern has subarctic climate.

So, before ending, let’s say something about culture. Culture is quite wide term, so when talking about culture of a certain country, there are many things that can be referred to that. Here, we will say a bit about Newfoundland and Labrador’s music. Newfoundland has its own dialects of French, English and Irish language, so it’s easy to guess that their music is influenced by English and Irish (and Scottish as well). A lot of their music is focused on the sea and sailing, so therefore there are a lot of songs speaking about these subjects.

Landseer Newfoundland dogs

Landseer is a breed of dog, which is mostly considered as a black and white type of Newfoundland dog. Their life span is up to 10 years.

They have got small eyes and black nose. Ears are pendant and their shape is closest to the triangle. Like other Newfoundland dogs, they also have webbed feet, which help them while swimming and their tails hang down. Also, their long outer coat is flat, while their undercoat is thick and oily. Landseers are quite big dogs and they tend to droll, but not so much as other giant breeds.
Though they have same origin, there are certain differences between a Landseer and Newfoundland dog. Landseer has shorter hair than Newfoundland and it doesn’t have so deep breast. In general, Landseer’s legs are longer than other Newfoundland’s, so they are a bit taller. Longer legs make them excellent runners, all in all quicker and therefore they are usually consider as dogs that are easier to train than others of its breed.

The temperament of Landseer dogs is similar as of other Newfoundland’s. They are known for their patience and loyalty. Also, they are very intelligent, noble and protective. If they recognize any sign of a danger, they will protect their owners. Knowing their nature is very important, mostly because of their training. They are calm and sensitive to voice, so the owner should be patient if he wants to succeed in training them. He also needs to be calm, but confident as well. Patience is the key. If dog doesn’t do something right away, there is no need for any kind of anger. If dog is patient, then the least what his owner can do is to be at least patient as his pet. Besides training, 

Landseer should be taken on a walk, once a day at least.

When talking about Landseer’s health, it should be mentioned that they are prone to hip dysplasia, which can be found in many animals. Like with other Newfoundland dogs, owners of Landseer dogs shouldn’t let them to get fat. The Landseer is also prone to a hereditary heart disease called sub – aortic stenosis (SAS), so it’s recommended that breeders check their puppy’s hearts by a veterinary cardiologist at 8 – 12 weeks of age.

If someone wants to buy a Landseer and want to know can he ensure living conditions for it, he should know that they aren’t very active indoors and if you want to keep them outside, small yard is enough for them. They are sensitive to heat, so, when it’s warm weather, you should always provide them a lot of shade and cold water. Also, these aren’t only information that Landseer owners should know, but they are one of the basics.

Newfoundland dogs prices

Are Newfoundland dogs expensive and hard to afford? Does it pay off to buy some? Well, answering on this one isn’t an easy task.
A price of a Newfoundland dog is usually about 1000$, but it can vary up to 2000. It is hard to answer are they expensive, because prices are very relative term. People are not earning same amount of money, plus their preferences are different. Some of them would rather buy some new fancy clothes, while others will spend their money on vacation. Therefore, a price of Newfoundland dog won’t be defined in this article as cheap or expensive, everyone knows his possibilities and will determine that for himself.
The price of Newfoundland dogs is higher, as the dog has more qualities. There are Newfies that cost less than 1000$, and it doesn’t have to mean that they’re bad, but it’s usually an older puppy. Some people might not be so picky, but the most of them will consider age as important criterion while deciding whether they will or not buy a pet.
So, like everywhere, more quality requires more money. Sometimes it’s better to give a bit more money for something that you know it’s good, then for something cheap and bad. The important thing about prices (and about buying a Newfoundland dog, because it’s pretty sure that if someone looks a price of some certain thing, he’s interested in buying it) is that u always get informed very well about anything that you’re buying. 
When talking about Newfoundland dogs, it’s great to know that you’re buying your pet from a reputable breeder. This isn’t possible always, but would be good to happen. How should reputable breeder look like? Well, some people suggest that Newfoundland dogs buyers should find breeders that tested the parents hips for dysplasia. Besides this, if the seller did any other kind of tests, it should mean that you found a good breeder.
The price of Newfoundland dogs also depends from their color. It probably won’t be always like this, but usually black are the cheapest, then black-and-white (“Landseer”) and gray, the rarest and most expensive.
Besides giving money for buying a Newfoundland dog, of course that it will “ask” for more money, like buying food and other expenses. So, it can’t be told “Yes, it does pay of to have it” or “No, it doesn’t”. Like it was said on the beginning, it depends from the people and their desires. If someone likes animals and has enough earnings to finance it, having a pet is a pleasure for him.

Names for Newfoundland dogs

Newfoundland dogs have got a lot of nicknames, such as Newf, Newfie and certainly the most popular – the gentle giant, because he really is it.. Ok, so, these are nicknames and you won’t name your dog with any of them, but probably the main reason for writing them is last nick – gentle giant. A lot of people name their pets according to their appearance, skills or something that’s special for them. Newfoundland dogs are big, they have got a kind nature and they are very patient. So, if you are out of ideas you can always give your pet a name that fits into his look or behaving.
Also, there are people that would like that their Newfoundland dog has the same name as certain famous Newf. Therefore, if you are one of them, here are few examples: Bilbo (was lifeguard on the beach), Hairy Man (helped a young a girl and her family to save more than 150 people from a shipwreck), Swansea Jack (well-known Welsh rescue dog), Josh (winner of the Westminster Dog Show, 2004), Robber (dog of the composer Richard Wagner, inspired the opera “Flying Dutchman”) and others.

If you don’t want to, of course that you don’t have to give your Newf the same name as some famous Newfoundland dog had. Besides giving famous names or according to their look, you can always be creative, or search the net if you aren’t into dog’s names. Some good examples for names could be: Blake, Bruno, Buxley, Greta, Henry, Flora, Sam, Jessie, Jumbo, Wolfgang, Max and so on. Newfie is considered by a nickname, but it can be also a name for your Newfoundland dog.
Is the name important and does it determine the one who carries it? Well, this is very questionable and hard to answer. Some people think it is, so they are very slow and careful while deciding what name will their pet have, while others don’t pay so much attention to it and naming isn’t a hard job for them. However, it’s probably a good idea to give your dog some usual name, so he can get used to it easily. This is especially important while training phase. The sooner your Newfoundland dog learns his name, further job will be easier. If your Newf doesn’t remember his name right away, don’t be impatient. Newfoundland dogs are known as patient, so if you want to earn their trust, it will be good that you act on the same way.
